Power outages as a result of morning straight-line winds are being reported in all areas of Empire District Electric’s service area.

According to Mike Palmer, vice president of commercial operations, about 60,000 customers are without power and damage assessment is still being done as the storm moves out of the east end of the service area.

According to the National Weather Service, winds gusting up to 85 mph ripped through the area early today.

Palmer said customer should stay away from downed power lines. Those without power can call 1-800-206-2300 to report the outage.
