As of 10:30 a.m. today, only three people had been treated for minor injuries at Joplin hospitals in connection with the severe storm that struck the Joplin area.

A spokeswoman for Freeman Hospital West said three people were treated for minor injuries there. A spokeswoman at St. John’s Regional Medical Center said no injured residents had been treated there.

Keith Stammer, emergency management coordinator for Joplin and Jasper County, said the city’s storm sirens were sounded at 7 a.m. for three minutes. They were activated again at 8 a.m. when residents of the Iron Gates area reported seeing rotation in the southwest part of the city.

The city’s sirens are sounded when a storm is approaching Joplin with straight-line winds of 75 mph. The National Weather Service said wind gusts reached 85 mph in Joplin.

Stammer said, “The National Weather Service told us at 6 a.m. this morning that this storm would pack a one-two punch. We were told that winds would be a concern on the frontside and the backside. That’s exactly what happened.’’

Stammer said most of the damage across county was in the form of trees and limbs being down, power out and roof damage. There are several places in the county where houses were hit by trees and barns were damaged.

He said the worst of the damage in the county was north west of Carl Junction near highways 171 and 96, and near Route YY.

In Joplin, houses were damaged by falling trees in the Royal Heights area.

Stammer said four damage-assessment teams are out checking conditions in Joplin.
