American Ramp Co. will hold a free event Saturday for skateboard riding.

A ramp will be erected on the parking lot at Memorial Hall for free skating from 9 a.m to 3 p.m.

The demonstration is being held to gauge local interest in a skatepark. The ramp company has offered to install a ramp in Schifferdecker Park at half price and to do the maintenance work on the ramp since it is a local company and could use the ramp for demonstrations for its customers.

The Joplin City Council will be checking on participation at the event as one factor in its decision whether to install a skatepark.

Jim Moss, chief executive officer of ARC, said there will be contests for skateboard tricks and that the company’s founder will be there to skate.
