Mercy Village reopens doors in wake of storm

Maxine Bayliff said she had good reason to enjoy a piece of celebratory sheet cake on Tuesday. She was home for the first time in nine months. Bayliff, 84, is one of 60 low-income senior residents of Joplin who survived the May 22 tornado but were displaced by it when their home, Mercy Village, was left uninhabitable.

The Grand River Dam Authority Lake Patrol is reporting today that the body of Quinton E. Turnbough, a 45-year old Afton man, was recovered from the waters of Grand Lake on Wednesday afternoon. A family out for a swim, first discovered the body floating in approximately three feet of water, in the Horse Creek arm of Grand Lake, in Delaware County.

The body has been released to the State Medical Examiners Office for further examination. At this time, the GRDA Lake Patrol is continuing its investigation.

Council OKs upgrade for storm sirens, change in use policy
The Joplin City Council approved a major upgrade to the city’s storm sirens Tuesday night, and changed policies with regard to their activation and testing. The council directed the city staff to take immediate steps to upgrade 16 of the city’s 25 sirens with newer technology that will allow for silent testing, and the ability to activate the sirens individually or in groups.

Commission votes to rebid contract for jail commissary
The Jasper County Commission will seek new bids for the operation of the commissary at the county jail, members agreed on Tuesday. The commission took the action after hearing a report from Norman Rouse, attorney for the panel, who reviewed history of the operation, including changes made by Sheriff Archie Dunn last year to waive the 10 percent commission paid by the contractor, Keefe Commissary Network. Previously, that money had gone into the county’s general fund.
