PITTSBURG, Kan. — An adult who has Crawford County’s first confirmed case of swine flu was recovering Wednesday at home, said Janis Goedeke, health officer for the Crawford County Health Department.
Goedeke said the case was reported Tuesday night to the county department. The case of H1N1 influenza has since been confirmed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Goedeke said she couldn’t provide any additional information.
The Crawford County case and a case reported Wednesday in Miami County bring the total number of cases in Kansas to 132.
The state health department on June 12 confirmed two cases of H1N1 influenza in adults in Labette County. On June 25, the presence of the virus was confirmed in two children in Neosho County.
The symptoms of swine flu include a fever higher than 100 degrees, body aches, coughing, sore throat, respiratory congestion and, in some cases, diarrhea and vomiting. Those who experience symptoms should contact a doctor, authorities say.
To prevent spread of the virus, the KDHE recommends that people wash their hands thoroughly, and avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth. People should stay home when they are sick to avoid spreading the flu.
The World Health Organization has declared the 2009 H1N1 influenza to be a global pandemic, meaning that it is infecting people worldwide.
State reports
No deaths from swine flu have been reported in Kansas, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
State health agencies were reporting Wednesday that 62 cases of H1N1 had been confirmed in Missouri, including one death. There were 144 confirmed cases in Oklahoma, including one death.
