COLUMBUS, Kan. — Jeffrey Pittman was charged Wednesday in Cherokee County District Court with four felony drug counts connected with his arrest on Monday.
Pittman, of Carterville, Mo., was assistant Cherokee County attorney from March 26, 2001, to Feb. 14, 2002. The Kansas Supreme Court disbarred him last year, citing, among other things, his criminal activity.
Assistant Kansas Attorney General Steven Wilhoft charged Pittman with felony methamphetamine manufacturing, felony possession of meth ingredients, felony use of drug paraphernalia, felony meth possession, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
A car driven by Pittman was stopped by Galena police Monday afternoon in the 1300 block of East Seventh Street for an alleged defective brake light. He was arrested on a fugitive warrant from Ottawa County, Okla., and on local traffic charges.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Galena police executed a search warrant at Pittman’s former law office at 702 S. Main St. in Galena in connection with the arrest and an investigation that was already under way.
Pittman in 2006 was convicted in Ottawa County District Court on a misdemeanor drug charge. He didn’t report to jail after being sentenced to 30 days in jail, resulting in the arrest warrant.
He also has been charged with felony marijuana possession and other crimes in Jasper County, Mo.
Labette County District Judge Robert Fleming presided over Pittman’s initial court appearance Wednesday. Robert Myers has been appointed as Pittman’s attorney.
Pittman remained in the Cherokee County Jail on Wednesday. His bond was set at $100,000, plus a $7,000 fugitive bond from Oklahoma.
