The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department says that the autopsy of a body discovered Sunday night in a shallow grave on old strip-mining property near Mulberry, Kan., has identified the deceased male as Richard Davis.

Davis, 37, had been missing since Oct. 30. Duane E. Wahl, 33, was charged Dec. 9 with Davis’ murder. Davis, his wife and their two children had been living with Wahl and Wahl’s girlfriend at a home in Mulberry when he disappeared.

Sheriff Sandy Horton said the autopsy conducted by a state medical examiner in Topeka, Kan., did find some preliminary indications of the cause of death.

But that information is not being made public for investigative reasons, the sheriff said.

The body was exhumed on the strip-mine property Monday afternoon and sent to the medical examiner’s office. Investigators were led to the burial site by information obtained from a relative of Wahl, according to the sheriff.
