JOPLIN, Mo. — Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin has received a $203,000 grant for the construction of two safe rooms on the church campus, 2616 Connecticut Ave.

The grant was awarded by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, a 2.3 million member church body based in St. Louis. The safe rooms will be used as classrooms for Martin Luther School, which the church operates, and will be open during inclement weather to the school’s 150 students, congregational members and members of the community.

“This $200,000 grant ensures that the entire $500,000 project can move forward, and that means we can take the next step toward keeping our great kids safer and making our community stronger,” said Jeremy Schamber, principal of Martin Luther School, in a statement.
