Annexation sought for St. Mary's Catholic Church construction

JOPLIN, Mo. — A request that the city annex land for the new St. Mary’s Catholic Church and elementary school will be heard today by the Joplin Planning and Zoning Commission.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau is asking the city to annex into its boundaries a 23-acre site for the new church. The land is near 32nd Street and Central City Road.

The church, rectory, school, parish center and other property, at 2415 S. Moffet Ave., were destroyed in the 2011 tornado. Part of the land where the church and school were located was sold to Empire District Electric Co. to enlarge a substation near 26th Street and Moffet Avenue.

The diocese also has requested the annexation of right of way on Central City Road from 26th Street to 32nd Street that will serve as a link to make the church site contiguous to the city limits.

In other business, the commission will consider a request by People’s Bank of Seneca to rezone lots at 1731 E. 20th St., and at 1830 and 1902 S. St. Louis Ave. for construction of a bank branch. The lots are zoned non-retail commercial in a planned development and residential district. The bank seeks neighborhood commercial zoning in a planned development.

Rezoning of property at 1802 S. New Hampshire Ave. is requested by William J. Cearnal. The property currently is zoned single-family residential. Cearnal is seeking two-family residential zoning to build a duplex.

A special-use permit is sought by Sandra Wade at 714 N. Pearl Ave. She wants to operate a day care center in a family home.

A special-use permit is sought by Ludmeyer Investments, 2931 E. 17th St., for the construction of a parking lot.
