New railroad bridge planned for Route 171 near Carterville

CARTERVILLE, Mo. — Work to replace the northbound Route 171 bridge over the Missouri-Northern Arkansas Railroad tracks between Carterville and Brooklyn Heights is scheduled to begin Monday, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The first work drivers will see is construction of temporary crossovers in the median. Lane closings will be needed at various times during this median work.

In early June, Route 171 traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with northbound traffic shifted across the median and into the southbound left lane.

After northbound traffic is shifted, contractor crews will tear down the existing bridge and replace it with a new structure.

The project is part of MoDOT’s “Safe & Sound’’ bridge-improvement program.

The prime contractor on the project is Pace Construction, of West Plains, doing the work for a low bid amount of $2.2 million.

The project is scheduled for completion by Dec. 1.
