Wally Kennedy: Curt Carr creates food niche on South Range Line

JOPLIN, Mo. — When someone tells me I need to check out something, I generally do, but I don’t always get to it as quickly as I should.

I was told that I needed to check out what’s going on with Millsap Produce, 4902 S. Range Line Road, but I was reluctant to head so far south on Range Line because that meant I had to travel through a lot of highway construction at Range Line and Interstate 44 to get to it.

With that project in much better shape than it was a few weeks ago, I bobbed and weaved through the new interchange on Friday and headed to Millsap Produce.

Millsap was a strictly wholesale operation for produce for nearly 20 years. It was purchased on Nov. 1 by Curt Carr, owner of Joplin Greenhouse, 2820 E. 32nd St. The produce shop has evolved since then into something special.

Carr opened a retail shop. Soon after, he got requests for organic vegetables and fruit, and cage-free chicken eggs. The shop has turned into a hub for locally-grown produce and organic foods. You can also get hard-to-find things there such as chow-chow, hot pepper relish, honey, jams, pickles, candy, specialty cheeses, and even a brand of olive oil.

Worden’s Meat, which operates storefronts in Joplin and Webb City, has put a freezer in Millsap Produce with a selection of meats. Worden’s Meat is USDA inspected. The grass-fed beef is free of additives, steroids and antibiotics.

If you visit there soon, make sure you check out the big watermelons and pumpkins outside. The watermelons, I was told, weigh about 115 pounds each. The pumpkins are giving them a run for their money.

Speaking of this year’s pumpkin crop, the picking has just started. Carr, who has an 11-acre pumpkin and specialty squash garden with drip irrigation, said this year’s crop will be plentiful.
