JOPLIN, Mo. —
An invitation to bid has been issued by the city of Joplin for the construction of a new swimming pool in Schifferdecker Park.
Contractors have until 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, to submit a bid on the project. A meeting for contractors will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at City Hall to discuss the specifications of the project. Attendance is mandatory to make a contractor eligible to submit a bid.
The project includes construction of a 50-meter pool. Next to it, plans call for construction of a shallow play pool and a lazy river. The main pool will have diving boards, water slides and a water spray pad. The existing bathhouse is to be remodeled and enlarged by about 1,400 square feet for concessions and pool workers.
Water’s Edge Aquatic Design, of Lenexa, Kan., was the designer. It conducted two public comment sessions to find out what type of swim center residents wanted.
A new pool suitable for swim teams to use was recommended by a task force that two years ago put together a list of project proposals for renewal of the quarter-cent sales tax for parks and stormwater projects. Voters last year agreed to a 10-year renewal that started in April. A budget of $5.8 million was set for the project.
Parks Director Chris Cotten earlier this month sought the approval of the design plan by the City Council to clear the way for seeking bids and the start of construction this fall.
Jennifer Martucci, president of the Joplin Swim Team, said the pool will be a boost for competitive swimming.
“After seeing the plans at the City Council, it certainly is going to take care of any needs we might have,” she said. “They sought our input, which is great, and the plan will accommodate the numbers of swimmers we will bring here next year.”
She said the swim team season starts the Tuesday after Memorial Day, and she is going to a meeting this weekend at which next year’s schedule of meets will be decided.
“I am going to put in for a swim meet for next season” that she hopes will bring more visitors to Joplin to support local businesses while they’re here. A date for the swim meet will be designated at the meeting. “We’re going to do that with the hope the pool will be ready,” she said.
Contractors and subcontractors that would be interested in doing the work must provide documentation of their qualifications for the work by filing an application with Water’s Edge by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31.
