Pets in the city of Neosho are required by law to be licensed. This law is not just another scheme designed by lawmakers to get into your pocket and take your hard-earned money.
Animals that are licensed have an extra level of protection in the event that they become lost. A license on a pet’s collar tells everyone that the pet is a loved member of a family and not an unwanted stray. It also lets authorities know that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies and that it is safe to handle. It allows the person who finds your pet a means to identify you and expedites your pet’s safe return home. Responsible pet owners take extraordinary measures to safeguard their pets, and the city of Neosho is providing a one-stop venue to support their efforts.
The city of Neosho will hold Pet Fair 2013 from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the Lampo Community Center, 500 E. Spring St. The fair is an effort to raise public awareness of pet services available in the Neosho area.
The pet fair also will help residents meet the city’s legal requirement that pets over 4 months old be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. The Lampo Center will be outfitted with vendor and service booths for local retailers and agencies to be on-hand to provide information, products and services. Please make sure your pets are properly leashed or in a carrier for safety.
During the pet fair, Dr. Kent Findley, of Pet Clinic of Neosho, will provide discounted vaccinations for dogs and cats, including rabies vaccines.
For those who do not already have a pet, Faithful Friends Animal Advocates and the Carthage Humane Society will provide information on how to adopt one and perhaps have a variety of animals in search of a new forever home for you to choose from.
Veterinarians from other local clinics, such as Pinnacle Vet Clinic, will be available to address concerns regarding pet health. Products to meet your at-home pet care needs will also be available.
Crowder College Veterinarian Technician training program personnel will have educational information and materials available for those interested in a career in animal care services.
Cornerstone Pet Care, Styling Doggie and All Breed Paw Prints mobile groomers will be demonstrating at-home grooming techniques to help maintain your pet’s cut and style between visits, including nail trimming and ear cleaning.
Tri-State Kennel Club will be demonstrating “Responsible Dog Ownership” training techniques, and will offer its schedule of services in agility and obedience training for dogs.
Noah’s Ark Pet Store will offer AKC puppy resource kits that include a microchip and lifetime monitoring for attendees to purchase. Chipping helps further ensure the safe return of a lost dog. The kits include a 60-day trial health care plan for your pet and a training video as well.
Joe’s Pet Food will have products available for your pet’s nutritional needs.
Petex 2 Animal Transportation Services provides a service to expertly deliver or transport pets across the state or the country. Representatives will be available to address questions regarding this service.
New pet license fees took effect March 1, and will apply at the pet fair. Annual tags are free for neutered or spayed pets, and $20 for non-neutered or non-spayed pets. More information may be obtained from the city of Neosho at 451-8050.

Murder warrant issued in fatal domestic shooting
Police believe Doyle Handle shot himself after fatally shooting Dena Davenport during a domestic disturbance Thursday night at their residence in Grove. Officers responded to a 6:55 p.m. report of a shooting at the couple’s home on Wood Street on the southwest side of Grove and found Handle, 52, in the front yard with a gunshot wound to his jaw.

Local lawmakers review session accomplishments
Joplin area lawmakers cited accomplishments and disappointments in the just-concluded Missouri legislative session during a brunch Friday sponsored by the Neosho Chamber of Commerce. Measures benefiting veterans issues were addressed in the session that ended a week ago, along with work force and labor issues, lawmakers said.

Diamond High School band prepares for Liberty Bowl

Area pools ready for plunge; Schifferdecker opening still to be announced
