Church group builds three houses in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. — Approximately 120 people associated with the Church of the Nazarene descended Monday morning on the 2600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue to construct three new houses.

Ally Barnes, of Carthage, who is coordinating the work, said families with children will be given the keys to the houses when the construction work is completed.

“It will be their first home for most of them,’’ said Barnes. “It’s a gift from us to them.’’

The families applied for the houses. The names of those who have been chosen to receive a house have not been released.

The church group purchased the lots after the May 22, 2011 storm. They poured concrete foundations and prepared the sites in March and April.

The construction work is to be completed by July 13.
