Colonial Fox Theatre ready for first event in 28 years

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Organizers are ready for the first event in 28 years to be held in the historic Colonial Fox Theatre in downtown Pittsburg.

Today, the Antique, Vintage and Collectibles Market will open at 9 a.m. with local and regional vendors set up outside the Fox on Broadway between Fourth and Sixth streets. It will run until 4 p.m.

The Antique Appraisal Fair will be held inside the theater from noon to 2 p.m., giving local and regional antique owners a chance to have their heirlooms appraised by experts.

A 4:30 p.m., a live consignment auction will be held in the theater, in which a professional auctioneer will auction antiques registered by the public. Of the proceeds, sellers will receive 90 percent, and 10 percent will go toward continued revitalization of the theater.

Local antique dealers Ted Monsour; Roger Stumfoll; Cathy Clouston, of Found It; Tim and Christy Corn, of Main Street USA; and Larry Black, of Dapper, have been working closely with the Colonial Fox Theatre staff to launch the event.

“We are staging it to be the premier antique event in Pittsburg, and hope it will become an annual event,” said Sarah Jensen, the theater’s public relations director.

The business plan for the 620-seat theater is to eventually present 504 screenings of films per year, including nearly 300 art house (foreign, documentary and independent) and 215 classics. The plan also calls for presentation of 100 live events per year, including about 77 local arts groups and 23 national touring artists.

Details: 620-235-0622, or or 620-235-0622.

The theater closed to the public in 1985 and fell into disrepair. In 2006, a group of volunteers took up the theater’s cause, and by 2008 had earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
