QUAPAW, Okla. —
Downstream Casino Resort has laid off around 35 of the 100 new employees it hired late last year for the opening of its second hotel, spokesman Sean Harrison said Wednesday.
Harrison said Downstream essentially over-hired and some of the positions have turned out to be unnecessary. He said the employees laid off were both full-time and part-time workers.
“It’s kind of natural to over-hire,” Harrison said. “It’s a normal adjustment in the work force to maintain business efficiency.”
Downstream debuted its 152-room, $50 million Kappa Hotel at the end of 2012. With the 100 new jobs, employment then was around 1,100.
“We’ve always run pretty lean,” Harrison said.
