JOPLIN, Mo. —
Chuck and Gay Whorlow, of Joplin, are among 35 Missourians picked for the lieutenant governor’s annual Senior Service Award. The awards were presented by Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder on May 8 in Jefferson City.
The Whorlows, 3519 S. Moffet Ave., were nominated by Shelly Goerz, director of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Southwest Missouri in Joplin, and by Bill Blair, vice president of American Rehabilitation Ministry Inc.
For the past 19 years, the Whorlows have volunteered in three agencies under the RSVP umbrella.
Chuck said they were delivering Meals on Wheels in Ames, Iowa, before moving to Joplin after retirement, and have continued that after coming here.
In 2012, they gave more than 2,000 total hours to the local Area Agency on Aging’s Homebound Meals program, Spring River Christian Village and American Rehabilitation Ministry.
“We just enjoy doing things for people. We just enjoy helping people,” said Gay, 80.
“Providing meals for the homebound goes without saying how much of an impact it has on those that would be without if not for these meals,” said Goerz in her nomination letter. “The help they provide to those in Spring River Christian Village nursing home brings a bright spot to their days.”
Gay said they help set up for meals in the dining room at Spring River.
Blair said the Whorlows have been volunteering at ARM since 1996. Chuck, who is 87, said they help sort greeting cards that are donated by companies such as Hallmark and given to prisoners so they can stay in contact with family and friends.
Kinder presented the Whorlows with an official declaration and a Senior Service Award lapel pin at a ceremony in the Capitol last week.
“Chuck and Gay Whorlow set an example for all Missourians with their kindness and willingness to serve full time as volunteers in the Joplin community,” Kinder said in a statement. “Their selfless service is an inspiration to all who know them.”
Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder said his office received more than 150 nominations for the Senior Service Award this year.
