Tribal celebration on tap next weekend in Miami

MIAMI, Okla. — Native American dancers, a carnival and KidZ Alley, the Wardog Chili Cook-off, a car show, the Route 66 Dachshund Race, and arts and crafts will be featured at the Miami NOW (Native Oklahoma Weekend) Festival scheduled Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28 to 30.

The festival, now in its fourth year, will be staged at the Miami Fairgrounds, located south of the intersection of Main Street and Steve Owens Boulevard.

The featured event during the weekend is the Native American Experience, which will showcase tribal storytelling, singing and tribal dance demonstrations, including the Buckskin, Fancy, Shawl, Jingle, Shell Shaker, Traditional, Straight, Hoop, Fancy Gourd, Inter-Tribal, 2-Step, Gourd and Stomp Dances.

The dance arena is open to all dancers wanting to participate.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, a Best of the Best Dance Competition will take center stage and feature championship fancy dancers in a highly athletic dance with lots of tricks and movements in a flashy and colorful performance. Trophies and prize money will be awarded.

Additional heritage activities include singing, storytelling, historical exhibits, language games, and arts and crafts exhibits.

The carnival is back this year. The carnival will operate from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Advance wristbands are $18 and are on sale until Sept. 28 at the Miami Area Chamber of Commerce. Wristbands ($23) or tickets may also be purchased at the gate.

In addition, children will enjoy KidZ Alley free of charge. KidZ Alley will feature pony rides, a petting zoo, inflatables, climbing wall, bungee trampoline, carousel swing, face painting, miniature train rides, magician, storytelling, Native American flute playing, arts and crafts making. KidZ Alley is sponsored by the Child Care Development programs of area tribal nations.

Pre-registration is being held for vendors and competitors in the Wardog Chili Cook-off, a car show, the Route 66 Dachshund Race, and arts and crafts exhibits.

The Wardog Chili Cook-off, hosted by the Miami High School Basketball Booster Club, will be held Saturday. People who want to put their best bowl of chili to the test must sign-up for the cook-off by today. People also will be able to test chili by purchasing a tasting kit during the competition. Over 200 cars and motorcycles will gather at the fourth annual Endless Memories Car Show on Saturday at the Miami Fairgrounds. Classes include car, truck, hot rod and motorcycles. The Routes 66 Daschund Race will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Miami Fairgrounds. Details: Fay Culver at 918-542-1590.
