No clear preference in race to be Missouri’s Republican nominee for governor

JOPLIN, Mo. — Because there were so many choices on the Republican primary ballot, Shirley and Curtis Foreman, of Joplin, came prepared when they voted this afternoon at Calvary Baptist Church, 600 E. 50th St.

“Let me get out my sample ballot,’’ said Shirley Foreman, when asked who she had voted for in the Republican gubernatorial race. “I voted for (Dave) Spence and he did, too.’’

Shirley Foreman said a church she is affiliated with prepared a list of candidates that it recommended she support in Tuesday’s primary. Spence was recommended, she said.

“He must be right on the issues,’’ she said. “An example of that is if someone is for abortion, I vote for the other guy.’’

Donna Roberts, of Joplin, wasted little time getting to her car after leaving Calvary Baptist Church.

“Do you know how hot it is out here?’’ she asked. “My car said it’s over 100 degrees.’’

Roberts said she voted for Bill Randles in the Republican gubernatorial primary.

“He’s more conservative and that’s all I’m going to say,’’ she said.
