Army Corps of Engineers awards new contract for modular classrooms

JOPLIN, Mo. — A $1 million contract awarded by the Army Corps of Engineers will provided modular classrooms for Duquesne Elementary School pupils at Duenweg Elementary School, 202 Malloy Circle.

It is the most recent in a series of contracts awarded by the Corps of Engineers to help the Joplin School District prepare to start the school year on Aug. 17 following the destruction of the May 22 tornado.

The contract was awarded to Hunter Modular Construction Co., Jonesburg, and will provide eight classrooms, a standard gym, restrooms and a storm shelter.

The Joplin School District also has launched its Adopt-an-Eagle program, designed to provide each pupil in the tornado zone with a backpack or duffel bag containing school supplies. Each outfitted backpack will cost about $40.
