CASSVILLE, Mo. —
As anglers gear up for Friday’s opening of catch-and-keep trout season at Roaring River State Park, Naomi Shaw is looking forward to May.
That’s when a statue that has been a long time in the making will be dedicated to honor a group of men who helped make the park possible.
A life-size bronze statute of a CCC worker will be unveiled at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, in the park.
“The final payment has been made and we will have the ship date soon,” Shaw said of the statue.
Shaw, of Strafford, is the daughter of a former CCC worker at Camp Rusk in Wisconsin and Camp ZigZag in Oregon. She has spearheaded the campaign to raise the funds for the Roaring River statue.
Company 1713 began work in Roaring River in June 1933, part of a national program to provide young, unmarried men employment, lodging and meals during the Great Depression. Through 1939, they erected 33 buildings, including cabins, an improved hatchery and a new lodge, now on the National Register of Historic Places. They completed 17 acres of riverside improvements, six acres of landscaping, and miles of roads, trails and fences.

Two plead guilty to post-tornado wire theft
Two defendants pleaded guilty Monday to stealing copper wire from utility poles in the wake of the May 22, 2011, tornado that struck Joplin. Timothy M. Silveria, 45, of Joplin, and Nycoa K. Kracht, 32, of Laurel, Ind., entered open pleas of guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court to felony counts of theft from a public utility.
