JOPLIN, Mo. —
An approaching cold front late this afternoon could produce strong to severe storms in Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri, according to the National Weather Service.
Atmospheric instability and wind shear will increase in advance of the front.
The main risks associated with the front will be damaging straight-line winds of up to 60 mph and hail the size of quarters.
In addition, the risk for flash flooding is elevated due to the heavy rains that fell across the region on Wednesday. Some areas received 2 to 5 inches of rain. Locally heavy rainfall could occur in connection with the cold front.
A flash-flood watch will be in effect until 7 a.m. Friday.
