NEOSHO, Mo. —
The Newton County Commission has accepted a proposal identifying the costs to add a 48-bed expansion to the county jail. But the commission is still taking no action on moving forward with construction amid the economic recession.
“Now that we have conceptual drawings and a cost estimate the county can wait until an appropriate time to bid out the project,” presiding commissioner Jerry Carter said.
The expansion of the Newton County Jail in Neosho would cost just over $1.5 million, according to a proposal the commission received on Thursday.
Those costs include building detention modules, expanding the kitchen, and adding more medical cells.
But the plans are not expected to be implemented any time soon, until the economy rebounds or the county is in better shape to take on long-term debt. Carter said in April that the county intended to get the plans in place to be able to act quickly if funds became available or the economic outlook improved.
