MINDENMINES, Mo. —
Smoked bison will be on the menu for the Prairie Jubilee on Saturday at Prairie State Park. The park is north of Mindenmines in Barton County.
The jubilee, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is held every two years, and this year’s event will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the creation of the park.
“It’s the biggest event we do,” said Dana Hoisington, park naturalist.
Doug Ladd, director of conservation science for the Missouri chapter of The Nature Conservancy, will be one of several featured speakers. The Nature Conservancy was instrumental in the initial purchases that led to the creation of the nearly 4,000-acre park.
Visitors may tour a living history loop and learn about the Osage Indians, and 19th century hunters and trappers, as well as participate in activities and games. Those events include a bison chip throwing contest and a chance to watch experts make baskets from native grasses.
“We’re also going to have a lady with a tabletop loom who will be doing some weaving,” Hoisington said.
A local bluegrass band will perform.
The Missouri Prairie Foundation and the Missouri Department of Conservation plan to have booths at the event. Representatives will talk about prairie conservation efforts and, in the case of the state department, work toward restoring the prairie chicken in Missouri.
Wildflowers and other native prairie plants will be for sale from the Missouri Wildflower Nursery.
Admission is free. The lunch, provided by the Liberal FFA, Cloud’s Meats and Prairie State Park, will be $5 per person. The Liberal Area Civic Group will sell desserts and beverages.
In addition to the planned activities, the park’s visitor center offers interpretive displays about the prairie. The park has several trails of varying length.
Hoisington said the Prairie Jubilee typically draws about 1,000 visitors.
