A Joplin police officer testified Wednesday in the preliminary hearing of a Galena, Kan., woman that the car she was driving on July 21 narrowly missed him before it crashed into a utility pole.
Danielle Poindexter, 19, was bound over for trial at the end of the hearing by Associate Judge Richard Copeland in Jasper County Circuit Court on felony charges of attempted assault on a police officer and resisting arrest by fleeing.
“I didn’t want to get hit, so I just ran,” officer John Hollingsworth said. He said the car, which he later learned was driven by Poindexter, was careening toward him at a high speed. He said he was standing on a traffic island at 21st Street and Indiana Avenue. He said the car was being steered toward him..
Hollingsworth was asked if he was sure the car was headed for him.
“There were four open lanes that she could have taken,” he said.
He said that after the car crashed, he saw Poindexter get out of the car and run away. He gave chase until another officer caught her.
Another officer testified about the pursuit. He said he was attempting a traffic stop because the car had a defective taillight.
A felony charge of manufacturing drugs that was filed against Poindexter was dismissed. No evidence was presented to support that charge.
Also charged in connection with the incident is Carl Hart, 27, of Salem, Ind. He was a passenger in Poindexter’s car. He waived his preliminary hearing on charges of manufacturing a controlled substance and felony possession of a controlled substance. His next court hearing is set for Oct. 5.
Poindexter is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 15.
