Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative, based in Girard, Kan., has been awarded a $12 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a $16 million project to rebuild 374 miles of the utility’s distribution system through eight Kansas counties.
It is the biggest construction project in Heartland’s history, said spokesman Ron Graber.
Graber said the project will take three years and will result in fewer outages and shorter outages during sever weather.
