Emma Moore, a sixth-grader at Southwest City Elementary School, won the Joplin Globe’s 2010 spelling bee this evening by correctly spelling the word “avionics.”

Moore, 12, outspelled almost 100 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders from the Four-State area to receive her first-place prize, a trophy and $100.

Nathaniel Basham, a sixth-grader at Trinity Lutheran School, won second place, earning a trophy and $75.

Henry White, a fourth-grader at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day Elementary School in Joplin, won third place, earning a trophy and $50.
