A 39-year-old man suffered burns and smoke inhalation in a house fire early Tuesday in Joplin.

The Joplin Fire Department was called at 5:16 a.m. to the 1200 block of West Ninth Street, where firefighters found heavy smoke coming from a single-story home.

Fire Chief Gary Trulson said in a news release that the lone occupant of the home at the time, Keith Darden, was in another room when he heard a popping noise, and discovered smoke and fire in the front room.

Trulson said Darden suffered some burns and smoke inhalation before escaping. He was taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

The cause of the fire was traced to an electrical cord for a wall-mounted air conditioner, the fire chief said.

The owner of the residence was listed as Susan Snee.
