JOPLIN, Mo. —
The Jasper County prosecutor’s office has charged a 31-year-old convicted sex offender with residing within 1,000 feet of a school in Webb City.
Robert W. Beck was arrested Wednesday afternoon by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department and was being held on a $1,500 bond.
A probable-cause affidavit says the residence where he has been living at 1212 Austin St. is within 730 feet of a school. The affidavit states that Beck has a previous conviction for child molestation.
Capt. Derek Walrod of the Sheriff’s Department said Beck was notified of the violation when he reported his address to the sheriff’s office Dec. 10 as required by state law. Beck signed a document at that time acknowledging that he had been informed of the potential law violation and was advised that he had 30 days to find a new residence, Walrod said. He also was sent a letter informing him of the matter and the allowance for finding another place to live.
The affidavit states that Beck called a sheriff’s investigator Wednesday and said he was still living at the address because he could not find anywhere else to go. He was arrested a short time later.
Walrod said a similar arrest of another convicted sex offender was made Thursday in Carterville. No charge had been filed in that case as yet.
