12 Southeast Kansas counties will share $300,000 to assist homeless/near homeless families

— Twelve Southeast Kansas counties — Cherokee and Crawford included — will share $300,000 from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation to help eligible households with rental assistance and utility and security deposits.

Between 65 and 70 families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless could benefit, according to Becky Gray, SEK-CAP, which will distribute the money.

The funding comes from the federal Home Investment Partnerships Program. It is part of $1.2 million in tenant-based rental assistance to be shared by 10 nonprofits and public housing authorities in Kansas.

SEK-CAP, based in Girard, serves the region with housing and transportation needs and oversees the Pittsburg homeless shelter, which in the past year has served 300 individuals and almost always is full.
