PITTSBURG, Kan. —
A 51-year-old Pittsburg woman has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of her husband on Thursday.
Carla C. Moutz appeared Friday in Crawford County District Court, where bond was set at $250,000, according to Michael Gayoso, Crawford County attorney.
Moutz is accused in the death of her husband, John F. Moutz , 49, who was pronounced dead at Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg, after a shooting that occurred about 7:20 p.m. at a home on West Sixth Street.
Carla Moutz had been staying at the home, which was owned by her father, John Belew, according to Lt. Cris Hatcher, commander of the criminal investigations unit of the Pittsburg Police Department.
Belew was at home at the time, but Hatcher said police are not releasing information on who contacted authorities.
When officers responded, they found John Moutz suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken by Crawford County ambulance to Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities began searching for a female believed involved in the shooting and Carla Moutz was located shortly before 9 p.m. on the street near Forest Avenue and Olive Street, about 10 to 15 blocks from her father’s home. She had left on foot, Hatcher said, and was arrested by a Crawford County sheriff’s deputy involved in the search.
Authorities believe John Moutz, whose address was unavailable, died as a result of a single shot by a handgun after a bullet struck both his right forearm and upper chest, Hatcher said. An autopsy is being performed.
Carla Moutz was interviewed at the Pittsburg police station before being transferred to the Crawford County Jail. Her next court appearance is set for June 10 in Crawford County District Court in Girard, Gayoso said.
The investigation into the shooting continues. Police said they are asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact the Pittsburg Police Department at 620-231-1700.
