Police: New streetlights reducing crime in Joplin
Voter investment in new street lighting in some of Joplin’s high-crime neighborhoods appears to be paying off. As the streetlight program nears 75 percent completion, Joplin has seen a decline in property crimes in the targeted neighborhoods, according to the Joplin Police Department.

Bike ride, PSU event at Veterans Memorial to commemorate 9/11
A bike ride on the ninth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, will honor a former Joplin, Mo., cyclist who was killed in Afghanistan and raise money to buy bikes for the children of U.S. troops. The event is part of a larger ceremony and weapons display that will take place Saturday morning at the Pittsburg State University Veterans Memorial, 1090 S. Rouse Ave.

E-mail remarks offend some council members
Remarks made by the Joplin Sports Authority executive director in an e-mail regarding a City Council appointee to the JSA offended some council members and created controversy among them. At a meeting Aug. 16, the council made appointments to fill two seats on the JSA board: retired coach and businessman Jerry Chew, and marketer Matt Lee.

Bank robber draws 10 years in prison
A federal judge sentenced a Diamond man Wednesday to 10 years and one month in prison for robbing four banks a year ago in Missouri and Kansas. Judge Richard Doerr assessed Richard A. Bratt, 58, the term in a federal prison without any chance of parole during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Springfield. Bratt had pleaded guilty earlier this year to robbing banks in Joplin, Webb City, Neosho and Independence, Kan.

Escapees caught while breaking back into jail
Escape artists? Maybe. Criminal masterminds? Not so much. Two inmates at the McDonald County Jail were caught attempting to re-enter their cells after their escape from the same building only hours earlier, the sheriff said.

Whenever I need some change, I go into the basement, where we keep our own personal change machine. As change machines go, ours is pretty cool. When it’s not acting as a change machine, we are able to use it to dry clothes. I don’t know how the drying machine turns into a change machine. It just does.

Neosho man sentenced to life plus 227 years for rape of woman
A Neosho man was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison, plus 227 years, for the brutal rape and assault of a woman. Kevin A. Todd, 49, stood emotionless as Associate Judge John LePage imposed the sentence during a hearing in McDonald County Circuit Court.

Authorship of medical certificate at issue in Rita Hunter’s malicious prosecution trial
Rita Hunter testified in a Jasper County courtroom today that she filled out the medical certificate that was signed by a Galena, Kan., physician and that was then used to have the late Emma France declared a ward of the county.
