GIRARD, Kan. — A 23-year-old Pittsburg man will stand trial on three felony counts stemming from an alleged domestic assault on his girlfriend in August.
A charge of aggravated kidnapping was added to counts of attempted second-degree murder and criminal threat against Carl T. Powell II at a preliminary hearing this week in Crawford County District Court.
Powell is accused of assaulting his 24-year-old girlfriend Aug. 6 at their home in Pittsburg. Both the woman and the defendant were taken to Mount Carmel Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries after the domestic disturbance.
But Powell was placed under arrest on a charge of attempted murder and was held on a $100,000 bond. A count of criminal threat was added later by Crawford County Attorney Michael Gayoso. Gayoso submitted the third count of aggravated kidnapping at Powell’s preliminary hearing.
Powell pleaded innocent to all three counts during an arraignment that followed the preliminary hearing. His jury trial has been set for Feb. 24-26, 2010.
The court also heard evidence on four probation revocation requests filed on Powell and determined that he had violated conditions of probation he had been assessed in a prior case. Gayoso said disposition of those revocation requests will be decided after his trial on the more recent charges.
