PITTSBURG, Kan. — If there ever was a week of activities with something for everyone, this is it.
Tuesday
At 9 a.m., a house-raising of a different sort will begin in the west courtyard of the Kansas Technology Center on the campus of Pittsburg State University.
To celebrate National Campus Sustainability Day, which is Wednesday, students from the departments of family and consumer sciences, construction management and construction engineering will work with environmentalist “Big” John Lipscomb to build an entire house out of hay bales.
The work is expected to take six hours. The house will remain on display for the next year at the center.
At 2:30 p.m., Kansas Secretary on Aging Martin Kennedy will present Cornerstone Village with the prestigious PEAK (Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas Nursing Homes) Award in a ceremony at 1501 E. Centennial St. The public may attend.
Cornerstone Village is one of eight nursing homes in Kansas chosen for the award.
At 6:30 p.m., the Pittsburg Public Library, 308 N. Walnut Ave., will have a book discussion on the selection “Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society,” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. No registration is necessary. Librarian Carol Ann Robb said the discussion is open to anyone.
Wednesday
The annual PSU homecoming convocation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at Carnie Smith Stadium for recognition of candidates and voting on the 2009 king and queen. In case of inclement weather, the event will move to John Lance Arena in the Weede Building.
Pittsburg area adult education classes will begin at Pittsburg Adult Education, 1600 N. Walnut Ave.
Pre-enrollment is required, and enrollments are being taken from 8 to 11 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 5 to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. A $20 materials fee is due at enrollment.
Students who are 16 or 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when they enroll and must provide a high school release.

Thursday
At 10 a.m., French native Eric Vincent, a professional singer, will perform at Pittsburg High School, 1978 E. Fourth St.
French teacher Chris Colyer and her students saw Vincent perform a few years ago at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin and were inspired to schedule him to perform here.
Students in French classes at schools in Webb City and Carl Junction, Mo., and Coffeyville will be in attendance. The one-hour performance is open to the public for $6.
At 8 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium, 503 N. Pine St., PSU’s theater program will present “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” a Shakespearean comedy that tells the tale of mistaken passions during a magical romp through a forest. Performances also are slated for 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Admission is free for PSU students, $8 for the general public, and $5 for those younger than 17 or 65 or older. Tickets are available through the PSU ticket office, 620-235-4796, and at Memorial Auditorium 30 minutes before the show.
Friday
The Kansas Board of Regents and PSU will celebrate the inauguration of Steven A. Scott as the ninth president of the university. The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. in front of Russ Hall at PSU, with a reception slated for 4:30 p.m. at the Oval.
Saturday
Among the many activities scheduled for PSU’s homecoming, the parade is the community favorite. It begins at 9 a.m. on North Broadway and is best viewed between Second and Ninth Streets.
