JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri House Speaker Ron Richard said he had instructed the chief clerk of the House of Representatives to call for increased security on Tuesday at the capitol building, in the wake of a reported hostage situation at a nearby state government building.

Reached in his office in Joplin on Tuesday, Richard said he had contacted the chief clerk of the house, who had confirmed there was a hostage situation at the Governor's Office Building, which is near the governor’s mansion.

He said he was told the hostage situation is on the fifth floor, and that floor is on lockdown. The building primary houses staff of the Missouri Public Services Commission. Richard said it was his understanding some people have been told to leave the building, and others have been directed to stay inside their offices with the doors locked. He said capitol police, Jefferson City police and City police and agencies have responded.

He said he had instructed the chief clerk to increase security at offices in the capitol building.
