A former area band instructor has been charged in connection with multiple counts of sexual abuse in Ottawa County, Okla., according to court records.

Brian M. Rash, 38, is charged with one count of first-degree rape, one count of attempted rape in the first degree, four counts of rape by instrumentation, and two counts of making a lewd and indecent proposal to a child, according to on-line court records. Rash had been a band instructor at Neosho Middle School, Neosho, Mo., and in the Wyandotte, Okla., school system.

Rash was taken into custody Friday by Jasper County sheriff’s deputies, who arrested him on an Ottawa County warrant at a residence in the 900 block of W. 9th St. in Joplin, according to Capt. Derek Walrod of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department. Walrod said the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department had contacted Jasper County to see if Rash was at that address.

Rash was still in custody of the Jasper County Jail this afternoon, according to the jail.
