A charge of statutory rape has been filed against a 58-year-old man after an investigation by Joplin police and state child-abuse investigators.

David W. Campbell, 2720 S. Grand Ave., was arrested Monday in connection with allegations involving a 17-year-old girl, said Cpl. Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department. The Jasper County prosecutor’s office on Tuesday filed a charge of second-degree statutory rape against Campbell.

Niess said the girl recently told a family member that Campbell had been abusing her sexually. A call was made to the state’s child-abuse hot line, and the investigation ensued, he said.
