NEOSHO, Mo. — A 32-year-old man is in custody at the Newton County Jail, charged with attempting to rob the Taco Bell restaurant in Neosho while armed with a pocketknife.
Neosho police said a man displayed a pocketknife about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday to a cashier at the Taco Bell in the 1700 block of Industrial Drive and repeatedly demanded money. The cashier refused to give him any money, and the would-be robber fled empty-handed, police said.
Officers who were called to the restaurant identified the suspect with the help of Newton County sheriff’s Deputy Steve Lant, who thought he recognized descriptions of the suspect and his vehicle.
Lant and Neosho police detectives went to the suspect’s home on Palm Road outside Neosho and arrested Michael E. Kellstadt. The vehicle believed to have been used in the robbery attempt was found in the driveway at Kellstadt’s home, and a pocketknife and clothing he had been wearing were found in the house, authorities said.
The Newton County prosecutor’s office filed a charge of first-degree attempted robbery against Kellstadt on Wednesday. He remained in custody Wednesday night, with bond set at $20,000.
