FAIRVIEW, Mo. — The mayor of Fairview has been arrested on charges of stealing, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Department.
Sid Oliver was arrested at 2 a.m. today on felony warrants for two counts of Class C stealing, according to Sheriff Ken Copeland.
Oliver, 57, has been under investigation for allegedly receiving compensation from the city for work that included street repairs and building maintenance.
Missouri law imposes limits on how much Oliver, as an unpaid mayor, may receive. That limit is $500 per transaction or a total of $5,000 per year, unless the work is done after competitive bidding with proper public notice and after the bid is the lowest submitted.
Oliver has said that he was unaware of that statute.
He is currently being held on $5,000 bond, Copeland said.
