A member of the Joplin City Council, Jim West, said Tuesday he will announce Dec. 9 whether he will seek public office again.
West holds a general seat on the council, but has been considering a campaign for state office. He said Tuesday he will hold a press conference at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Joplin Public Library to announce his intent.
West has served three stints on the council beginning with a combination of appointive and elective terms that ran from 1988 until 1996 and again from 2000 to 2004. He was last elected in 2006.
There will be five seats filled on the Joplin council in the April 6 election.
Three incumbents, Mayor Gary Shaw of Zone 1, Mayor Pro Tem Mike Woolston, who holds another general seat, and Michael Seibert, who represents Zone 4, are circulating petitions for nomination. Potential candidates must garner 150 signatures.
A fifth incumbent, Phil Stinnett, has not yet said publicly whether he will run.
Another resident, Erik Wright, 28, 528 S. Jackson Ave., has obtained a nominating petition said he is considering a run for a general seat.
Nominating petitions may be obtained from the office of City Clerk Barbara Hogelin at City Hall, 602 S. Main St., until Jan. 19.
