The Ottawa County district attorney’s office indicated in court today that charges will be upgraded against two men accused of a recent home invasion in Quapaw, Okla.
Paul W. Murray, 32, of Quapaw, and Kenneth M. Nellums, 27, of Joplin, currently are charged with burglary, larceny from a house and misdemeanor assault and battery in the alleged invasion of the home of Katherine and Christopher Grover on Nov. 25. They are accused of entering the Grovers’ home on Nov. 25, assaulting them and stealing several knives, according to court documents.
An assistant district attorney told a judge today in Miami, Okla., that charges against the defendants will be amended to burglary and robbery. The upgraded charges are expected to be filed at a hearing Wednesday when preliminary hearing dates could be set.
Murray, who also faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence in the case, was convicted more than 10 years ago of second-degree murder in the 1994 death of Sheila Mayfield of Jasper, Mo. Mayfield was killed when Murray, then-16, and Benjamin Trammel, 15, threw an 8-pound rock from an overpass on the Will Rogers Turnpike through the windshield of her car.
Murray was certified to stand trial as an adult and was convicted of second-degree murder. He was in and out of prison for the conviction three times before finally completing his sentence in August of this year.
