ST. LOUIS (AP) — Veterinarians in Missouri have begun to offer a new vaccine against a highly contagious form of canine influenza that was first detected in 2004.

Most dogs have no immunity, and the virus can spread rapidly where they congregate.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Wednesday that the flu may have spread this year to the state.

Dogs with the H3N8 virus may develop a fever, lack energy and appetite, and have a nasal discharge and cough. Some develop a more severe form of flu. Five percent of cases are fatal.

Dr. Leah Cohn of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbia said only dogs that are in close contact with other dogs should be considered for the vaccine.

Canine influenza is not passed between dogs and humans.
