The Cherokee County, Kan., Health Department plans to resurrect a recycling effort.

County Commissioners Monday approved buying a trailer designed for recycling projects, at a cost of $13,831. The action was requested by Carl Hayes, health department environmental specialist.

Hayes said outside the meeting that the trailer would have 10 bins. He also said the new effort will be coordinated with SEK Recycling, based in Pittsburg.

The trailer will be placed in one of four communities, probably for a week at a time. The communities he is considering are Galena, Baxter Springs, Columbus and somewhere in northern Cherokee County — probably Scammon.

He said a previous recycling effort failed and he has heard from residents who are wondering when a new program would begin. He said some people have told him they have a garage full of recyclables they have been accumulating while waiting for the program to resume.

“It’s kind of encouraging to know that there’s support for it,” Hayes said.
