PITTSBURG, Kan. —
The city’s annual Fourth of July festivities get underway Saturday, with the bulk of activities clustered around or in Lincoln Park.
Saturday, the Fourth of July golf tournament tees off at 7:30 a.m. at Four Oaks Golf Course.
On Sunday, the Fourth of July tennis tournament start at 8:30 a.m. at the Johnson Tennis Complex. A wiffle ball tournament gets underway at the park at 9 a.m. Teams may register at the park information booth between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m.
Also on Sunday, a free Zumbathon will be held starting at 9:30 a.m. in the Four Oaks Parking Lot. At 10 a.m. the Freedom Fling Disc Golf competition will kick off in Lincoln Park; registration must be completed by 9:30 a.m. on the porch of Lincoln Center. Kiddieland Amusement Park will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
On Tuesday, activities continue at Lincoln Park with arts, crafts and food sales from 6 p.m. until dusk. Mike’s Amusements will be open from 6 p.m. until dusk, and Kiddieland will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Tailgatorz will perform from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and The Shane Duling Band will perform from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at the J.J. Richards Band Dome.
On Wednesday, the Firecracker 5K Run will get underway at 7:30 a.m. at Four Oaks Golf Course. The annual fishing derby will begin at 8 a.m. at the pond by the Lincoln Park tennis courts. Arts, crafts and food vendors will be open from 8 a.m. until dusk.
Tailwind Cyclists’ annual Fourth of July bicycle ride will leave from Lincoln Center at 9 a.m. The Rollin’ Nostalgia Car Show will be on display at 9 a.m. on McNally Drive, and Kiddieland will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
A baby contest is slated from 10 a.m. to noon in Shelter No. 3, with various age and gender divisions. Registration must be completed at the information booth by 9:30 a.m.
The annual radio-controlled airplane fly-in is slated to begin at 10 a.m. west of Atkinson Airport.
Mike’s Amusements will be open from 10 a.m. to dusk. A horseshoe tournament starts at 10 a.m. at Four Oaks Complex, with registration from 9 to 9:50 a.m. A youth bocce tournament will begin at the bocce court at 11 a.m., with registration before 9:30 a.m. at the information booth.
Building Blocks of Fun will be open in the park to young builders at 1 p.m., sponsored by the Family Resource Center. Also at 1 p.m., an adult bocce tournament will kick off at the bocce court. Register before 12:30 p.m. at the information booth.
The Aquatic Center will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., with all swimmers admitted for free. A dog show will begin at 4 p.m. at Shelter No. 3; register before 1 p.m. at the information booth.
Evening entertainment begins at 5:30 p.m. at Shelter No. 3 with polka music by 100 Percent Cotton and continuing at the J.J. Richards Band Dome from 7 to 10 p.m. with several acts.
A hotdog eating contest will be held at the band dome from 6 to 7 p.m., and a hot air balloon glow will be held from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at Stice Ball Field.
The annual fireworks display will end the day at 10 p.m. and may be seen over Lincoln Park.

Old McDonald County Courthouse to hold grand opening celebration this weekend
As Jean Stratton-Bird made her way into the war memorial room at the Old McDonald County Courthouse on Thursday, she came face to face with the memories of her brother Eldon E. Stratton, who was lost in battle in 1943 during War World II. “He is finally home,” Stratton-Bird said.

Murder warrant issued in fatal domestic shooting
Police believe Doyle Handle shot himself after fatally shooting Dena Davenport during a domestic disturbance Thursday night at their residence in Grove. Officers responded to a 6:55 p.m. report of a shooting at the couple’s home on Wood Street on the southwest side of Grove and found Handle, 52, in the front yard with a gunshot wound to his jaw.

Local lawmakers review session accomplishments
Joplin area lawmakers cited accomplishments and disappointments in the just-concluded Missouri legislative session during a brunch Friday sponsored by the Neosho Chamber of Commerce. Measures benefiting veterans issues were addressed in the session that ended a week ago, along with work force and labor issues, lawmakers said.

Diamond High School band prepares for Liberty Bowl
Classes were winding down last week at Diamond High School, but not for members of the marching band. Instead, they dug out some new music and began their first rehearsals in preparation for their next major appearance — the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, which is scheduled for Dec. 31 in Memphis, Tenn.

Stream sampling in Jasper County finds elevated levels of E. coli
Stream sampling conducted just before the Memorial Day weekend by the Jasper County Health Department found elevated levels of E. coli in every stream and river tested. Twenty-one sites were tested on May 22, following heavy rains earlier in the week.
