Rural Carthage man draws three years in child-porn plea deal

A judge assessed a rural Carthage man three years in prison Monday on a conviction for attempted possession of child pornography.

Daniel L. Morris, 23, 9258 Fir Road, pleaded guilty to the charge May 7 in Jasper County Circuit Court in a deal with the prosecutor’s office. The deal capped the prison time he might receive at no more than five years. He had been facing the possibility of up to seven years for a conviction.

Circuit Judge David Dally assessed Morris the term at his sentencing hearing Monday in Joplin.

Morris was arrested on the charge in July 2010 following an investigation by Detective Chip Root of the Joplin Police Department. The investigation was prompted by information received from a former friend of the defendant.

The former friend told police that he let Morris borrow his desktop computer in January and February 2009. When the computer was returned, the friend found images and videos of child porn on it.
