Webb City council considering tighter dog restrictions

WEBB CITY, Mo. — A recent attack by a pit bull on another dog within the city limits has prompted the City Council to take a look at whether to adopt an ordinance banning the breed.

The topic drew comments from residents at the council meeting May 9, and it is expected to be back before the panel May 23.

The issue stems from an incident on April 27 in which a pit bull owned by Marysue Garcia attacked a Shih Tzu owned by John Heigle in the 700 block of South Ellis Street, according to police Chief Carl Francis.

Heigle, 71, said he walks with his dog, Napoleon, several times a day in that neighborhood, and that the pit bull attacked without provocation.

The city attorney is continuing to research ordinances in play in other towns and court cases relevant to the issue.
