FRANKLIN, Kan. —
A month-long exhibit "The Way We Worked in Health Care" is on display at the Miners’ Hall Museum at the Franklin Community Center, 701 S. Broadway Ave.
At 1 p.m. Sunday a special program called “This is Your Life” will serve as the exhibit's opening program. It will include storytelling and memory sharing about health care in the last century and more. The guest of honor will be 100-year-old Cecelia Waggoner, a nurse who worked at Mount Carmel Hospital, taught at the Mount Carmel School of Nursing, and founded the nursing program at Pittsburg State University. Numerous area doctors, nurses and other caregivers also have been invited to take part.
Officials with Via Christi Hospital, the exhibit's host, are gathering archives and artifacts from the hospital’s collection and several other health care providers in the area to include.
The exhibit is part of the year-long buildup to the Smithsonian exhibition “Museum on Main Street, the Way We Worked in America” coming to the Miners Hall in May.
Admission is free. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, in addition to Sunday for the special program.

The nonfatal shooting of a 25-year-old man at a Joplin residence on May 13 has been deemed justified by authorities. Jacob B. Boykin, 21, of Joplin, shot Justin S. Johnson, 25, of Carterville, once in the chest with a small-caliber handgun at 5260 E. Sunny Acres Lane.

Federal, state leaders salute Joplin’s recovery
A deadly May twister may have punched a hole in Joplin and Duquesne two years ago, but the resolve to repair it will help other communities stand strong when they face similar disasters. That was the message of state and national diginitaries to a crowd of about 2,500 who observed the second anniversary of Joplin’s devastating May 22, 2011, storm during a ceremony Wednesday in Cunningham Park.
