Shannan Adams is not a breast cancer survivor, nor does she have any close family members or friends who are.
In the past few years, Shannan has met some folks who have battled cancer, but to say she has been affected by the illness on any sort of personal level would be stretching the truth.
So why is the 29-year-old human resources director at Clean Uniform heading up a golf tournament to raise money and awareness for breast cancer programs?
“It’s just something I feel strongly about,” she said. “Breast cancer awareness has just always been important to me, and it’s great to be able to raise awareness of women locally.”
Money raised at Clean Uniform’s Swing for Pink golf tournament will go to the Hope 4 You Breast Cancer Foundation. The foundation serves 12 counties in the Four-State Area.
According to the foundation’s website, the word “Hope” in the name is an acronym for “Help, Outreach, Prevent and Educate.”
Since Shannan became involved with Hope 4 You, she has met several breast cancer survivors, and that experience has made her more determined to advance the cause of research and awareness in the area.
The Swing for Pink golf tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Briarbrook Golf Course in Carl Junction. Registration for the 18-hole event gets under way at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost for a four-person team is $200. There are a number of corporate sponsorship opportunities available. To request a sponsorship or golfer registration form, people may call 417-623-7195, ext. 1204. The deadline for registration is Friday, Sept. 28.
This is Shannan’s first attempt at putting a golf tournament together, but she assured me that she is not having to work alone. She said several co-workers who are avid golfers and have taken part in a number of tournaments are helping. But still, Shannan is in charge of the event, and she admits to being just a tad bit nervous.
“But we’ve had a great response so far, and everything has been going smoothly,” she said.
The thing is, Shannan isn’t nervous so much for herself as she is for the Hope 4 You foundation. If the tournament is a success, more money will find its way to the organization.
“It’s just a great way to raise breast cancer awareness locally,” she said.
Nice folks do nice things for other folks for a variety of reasons. Some do it because they have had experience with an issue or know someone who has. Some folks do nice things for others just because.
In the end, it really doesn’t matter.
You may have heard that there has been some sort of political convention going on this week. If you have read or listened to any big-time media folks covering that convention, you might get the impression that half of the country hates the other half, and vice versa. Maybe the big-time media types are correct.
But that’s not what I see. What I see is nice folks doing nice things for other nice folks regardless of whom they voted for. It would be nice, I think, if the big-time media folks saw the same thing.
