JOPLIN, Mo. —
The international charity arm for Keller Williams Realty, KW Cares, presented a check today for $150,000 to the Joplin Tornado Relief Fund. It will be used to help build the Will Norton Memorial Miracle Field, a sports field for children with disabilities.
The field is being named for Will Norton, who died in the May 22 tornado on his way home from the Joplin High School graduation.
The field, which will be made out of specially designed rubber turf, could be built at the Joplin Athletic Complex.
Joplin Rotary Task Force Chair Jenny Hocker said the field will require little maintenance and several sports can be played there as long as they don’t require cleats.
Joplin Rotary also has raised $358,000 for the project. The total retail cost for the field is $330,000 and a playground, which will also be handicapped-accessible, costs about $200,000.
Hocker said the Parks and Recreation board will hold a special meeting Tuesday to discuss the location and now they are waiting to meet with the Joplin City Council to finalize plans and begin building.
