Pittsburg man suffers gunshot wound to abdomen

QUAPAW, Okla. — The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting of a 24-year-old man Tuesday night near a strip pit north of Mulberry, Kan.

Police tried to stop a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through Pittsburg shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday, but the driver did not stop until he reached Via Christi Hospital, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

As it turned out, a passenger in the vehicle, Harley Mitchell, of Pittsburg, had suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen, and the driver, Jeffery Hunter, 23, of Pittsburg, was taking him to the hospital for medical attention.

While en route, Hunter’s vehicle allegedly struck and sheared off a utility pole in Mulberry, the Sheriff’s Department said. He was subsequently arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Mitchell’s medical condition remained unavailable Thursday. The Sheriff’s Department said preliminary information indicated that Mitchell may have been shot near a strip pit at 270th Street and 675th Avenue.

Sheriff’s deputies were still looking into the circumstances of the shooting on Thursday without any additional charge having been filed.
